On February 4, 2025, we observe World Cancer Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about cancer and promoting its prevention, early detection, and treatment. This year's theme, “United by Unique,” emphasizes the individual experiences of those affected by cancer. Endocrinologists at Shashi Advanced Health, —Dr. Basavaraj G S, Dr. Mahesh DM, Dr. Tejaswi V, and Dr. Srinath Aswathiah—discuss various aspects of cancer care.

As an endocrinologist, I have witnessed a concerning rise in endocrine-related cancers in India, particularly breast and thyroid cancers. These cancers are often influenced by hormonal factors, making it essential to understand the role of hormones in their development.
Breast cancer, for instance, is strongly linked to estrogen levels. Women with higher lifetime exposure to estrogen due to early menarche or late menopause are at increased risk. Similarly, thyroid cancer incidence has been on the rise, with lifestyle factors such as diet and environmental exposures playing a significant role.
Early detection through regular screenings can significantly improve outcomes for patients. It is crucial to educate women about self-examinations and the importance of mammograms and thyroid function tests.
Dr. Mahesh DM
Lifestyle choices are pivotal in reducing cancer risk. As we mark World Cancer Day, it’s essential to advocate for healthy living as a preventive measure against various cancers. Obesity and physical inactivity contribute significantly to the development of several malignancies.
Encouraging a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while promoting regular physical activity can lower the risk of cancer significantly. Additionally, avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol consumption are critical steps in prevention.
Public health campaigns should focus on educating communities about these lifestyle changes and their impact on reducing cancer risk. By fostering healthier habits, we can collectively work towards lowering the incidence of cancer.
Dr. Tejaswi V
Cancer is not just a physical ailment; it profoundly affects mental health as well. On this World Cancer Day, it is vital to address the psychological needs of patients diagnosed with cancer. Many patients experience anxiety, depression, and fear following their diagnosis.
As healthcare providers, we must ensure that psychological support is an integral part of cancer care. This includes providing counseling services and support groups that allow patients to share their experiences and feelings with others facing similar challenges.
Creating an environment where patients feel heard and understood can significantly enhance their quality of life during treatment and recovery.
Dr. Srinath Aswathiah
The theme “United by Unique” resonates deeply with the need for equitable access to cancer care across different socioeconomic groups in India. Disparities in healthcare access can lead to late-stage diagnoses and poorer outcomes for many patients.
We must advocate for policies that ensure all individuals have access to necessary screening and treatment services regardless of their financial status or geographic location. This includes increasing awareness about available resources and support systems within communities.
By addressing these inequities, we can work towards a future where every individual has the opportunity for early detection and effective treatment of cancer.
World Cancer Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility in combating cancer through awareness, education, and advocacy. As endocrinologists at Shashi Advanced Health, we are committed to promoting hormonal health while addressing the unique needs of each patient affected by cancer. Together, let us strive for a world where every individual receives the care they deserve in their fight against this disease.
