Non-Classic CAH in Pregnancy
Can women with NCCAH get pregnant?
Yes! With treatment (glucocorticoids to suppress androgens), ovulation usually resumes, and pregnancy is possible.
What about during pregnancy?
Once pregnant, glucocorticoid treatment can usually be STOPPED. The placenta produces large amounts of progesterone, which naturally suppresses the mother's adrenal gland.
What if the baby has CAH?
- If the fetus is a girl with Classic CAH: High maternal androgens in early pregnancy could virilize the baby. In this situation, the mother may need to take Dexamethasone starting very early in pregnancy (before knowing the baby's sex).
- Genetic Testing: Amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) can determine if the baby has inherited CAH genes from both parents.
Important Note:
Treatment with dexamethasone during pregnancy is controversial and should only be done in specialized centers with genetic counseling.
