Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

What is CGM?

A CGM is a small sensor placed under the skin (usually on the arm or abdomen) that measures glucose levels 24/7. It sends real-time data to your phone or a receiver.

How is it different from finger sticks?

  • Finger sticks: A snapshot (one moment in time).
  • CGM: A movie (shows trends: rising, falling, stable).

Benefits:

  • Alerts: Warns you BEFORE you go too low or too high.
  • No finger pricks: Most modern CGMs don't require calibration.
  • Better A1c: Studies show CGM users have better control and fewer lows.
  • Peace of Mind: Parents of children with diabetes can monitor remotely.

Popular CGMs:

  • Dexcom G7: 10-day sensor, very accurate.
  • FreeStyle Libre 3: 14-day sensor, smaller size.
  • Guardian (Medtronic): Integrates with Medtronic pumps for automated insulin delivery.

Who should use it?

  • Anyone on insulin (Type 1 or intensive Type 2).
  • People with hypoglycemia unawareness (can't feel lows).
  • Pregnant women with diabetes.
