Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
What is CGM?
A CGM is a small sensor placed under the skin (usually on the arm or abdomen) that measures glucose levels 24/7. It sends real-time data to your phone or a receiver.
How is it different from finger sticks?
- Finger sticks: A snapshot (one moment in time).
- CGM: A movie (shows trends: rising, falling, stable).
Benefits:
- Alerts: Warns you BEFORE you go too low or too high.
- No finger pricks: Most modern CGMs don't require calibration.
- Better A1c: Studies show CGM users have better control and fewer lows.
- Peace of Mind: Parents of children with diabetes can monitor remotely.
Popular CGMs:
- Dexcom G7: 10-day sensor, very accurate.
- FreeStyle Libre 3: 14-day sensor, smaller size.
- Guardian (Medtronic): Integrates with Medtronic pumps for automated insulin delivery.
Who should use it?
- Anyone on insulin (Type 1 or intensive Type 2).
- People with hypoglycemia unawareness (can't feel lows).
- Pregnant women with diabetes.
