Pre-Diabetes
What is Pre-Diabetes?
It is a warning state where your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be called Diabetes. Your body is becoming resistant to insulin. Think of it as a "yellow light" before you get to diabetes.
How is it diagnosed?
- Fasting Glucose: 100-125 mg/dL (normal is under 100).
- A1c: 5.7-6.4% (normal is under 5.7%).
Why does it matter?
Up to 70% of people with pre-diabetes will develop Type 2 Diabetes within 10 years if they don't change their lifestyle. However, Pre-Diabetes is reversible!
How can it be reversed?
- Weight Loss: Even a modest 5-7% decrease in body weight significantly reduces risk.
- Exercise: 150 minutes a week of moderate activity (brisk walking).
- Diet: Reduce refined carbs (soda, white bread, sweets). Increase fiber and whole grains.
- Medication: Metformin is sometimes prescribed for high-risk individuals.
Bottom Line: Pre-Diabetes is a critical intervention point. Lifestyle changes NOW can prevent diabetes and all its complications.
