Gigantism & Acromegaly
What is the difference?
Both are caused by a pituitary tumor producing too much Growth Hormone (GH).
- Gigantism: Occurs in Children before bone plates close. The child grows incredibly tall (sometimes over 7 or 8 feet) and rapidly.
- Acromegaly: Occurs in Adults after bone plates close. You don't get taller; instead, bones thicken (hands, feet, jaw) and soft tissues swell.
Why is Gigantism rare?
Pediatricians usually catch rapid growth early.
Treatment:
Both require aggressive treatment to stop the excess growth and protect the heart.
- Surgery: To remove the pituitary tumor.
- Medication/Radiation: To lower GH levels if surgery isn't fully effective.
