Hashimoto's in Children

Is Hashimoto's different in kids?

Hashimoto's (Autoimmune Hypothyroidism) is the most common cause of thyroid disease in children. The immune system attacks the thyroid, making it slow.

Signs to Watch For:

  • Growth Failure: The hallmark sign. A child who stops growing or falls off their height curve.
  • Goiter: A visible lump in the neck.
  • Puberty: Delayed puberty (or sometimes, paradoxically, early puberty).
  • Sluggishness: Fatigue, constipation, dry skin, and declining grades.

Treatment:

Levothyroxine is the standard treatment. It is a daily pill.

  • Monitoring: As children grow, their dose needs frequent adjustment. Blood tests are usually done every 3-6 months.
  • Outcome: With treatment, the child will catch up on growth and live a completely normal life.
