Type 2 Diabetes in Youth
Why are kids getting Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 Diabetes used to be called "Adult Onset." Now, due to rising rates of childhood obesity and inactivity, we see it in teenagers and even younger children.
How is it different from Type 1?
- Type 1: Autoimmune; the body stops making insulin. Needs insulin immediately.
- Type 2: Insulin Resistance; the body makes insulin but can't use it well.
Signs in Teens:
- Darkening skin on the neck (Acanthosis Nigricans).
- Frequent urination/thirst.
- Unexplained weight loss (in late stages).
- Yeast infections.
Treatment:
Type 2 in kids can be more aggressive than in adults.
- Lifestyle: The whole family must change eating habits. It cannot just be the child "on a diet."
- Metformin: The only oral pill approved for kids.
- Insulin: Often needed early to save the pancreas.
- New Meds: Liraglutide (Victoza) is now approved for kids 10+.
